Prism

Prism is the fourth studio album by American singer Katy Perry. It was released by Capitol Records on October 18, 2013. While the album was initially planned to be « darker » than her previous material, Prism ultimately became a prominently dance-inspired record. The singer worked with several past collaborators, while enlisting new producers and guest vocals. Much of Prism revolves around the themes of living in the present, relationships, and self-empowerment. Many critics praised the album’s lyrical content for being more « mature » while others considered Prism to be more formulaic than her previous material.

The album debuted atop the US Billboard 200 with 286,000 copies sold, becoming Perry’s best opening week to date. The album also peaked at number one in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.

Prism became Perry’s fastest-selling album, the second best-selling album in Australia in 2013, and the second best-selling album released by a woman in the United States in 2013. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) reported that Prism was the sixth best-selling album in the world in 2013, the best-selling album in the world in 2013 released by a woman, and labeled Perry « a global phenomenon. »

It has globally sold 4 million copies as of August 2015. The album’s success continued throughout 2014, ranking within the top 10 of the annual charts for 2014 in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and earned Perry a Grammy Award nomination for Best Pop Vocal Album at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards.

The release of the album was preceded by the release of two singles. « Roar » was released on August 10, 2013 as the album’s lead single. It became a commercial success and topped the Billboard Hot 100. « Unconditionally » debuted on October 16, 2013 as the record’s second single and was a moderate commercial success worldwide.

In between the release of these two tracks were the releases of promotional singles « Dark Horse » on September 17 and « Walking on Air » on September 30, 2013. « Dark Horse » was released as the album’s third single three months later on December 17, 2013, and also reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. « Birthday » and « This Is How We Do » were the fourth and fifth singles, respectively. Prism was further promoted through The Prismatic World Tour.

1989

1989 is the fifth studio album by American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift. It was released on October 27, 2014, through Big Machine Records. Swift began preparing for the album during the same year that Red was released, and during a significant amount of media scrutiny. Over the course of the two-year songwriting period, she primarily collaborated with producers Max Martin and Shellback—Martin served as the album’s executive producer alongside Swift. The album’s title was inspired by the pop music scene of the 1980s, particularly Swift’s birth year.

The album represents a sonic departure from the country music of her previous albums, and is described by Swift as her « first documented official pop album. » In contrast to Swift’s previous work, the production of 1989 consists of drum programming, synthesizers, pulsating bass, processed backing vocals, and guitars. 1989 received generally positive reviews from contemporary music critics and it was ranked as one of the best albums of 2014 by several publications, including Billboard, Time, and Rolling Stone.

After debuting at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200, 1989 sold 1.287 million copies during the first week of release. The total U.S. sales figure from the debut week of 1989 was the highest since 2002, and made Swift the first artist to sell one million or more copies of an album in a week-long period for three albums. 1989 eventually became the best-selling album of 2014 in the U.S. market and has sold over 5.7 million copies as of February 2016, while selling 8.6 million worldwide.

Six singles have been released from the set: « Shake It Off », « Blank Space », and « Bad Blood » all reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, while « Style » peaked at number six, « Wildest Dreams » at number five, and « Out of the Woods » peaking at number 18 in 2014. The first five singles have all reached number one on the Adult Top 40 and Mainstream Top 40 and all have received a multi-platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

1989 won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year, making Swift the first and only female artist so far to win the top prize at the ceremony twice with her own works, having previously won in 2010 for Fearless, and her third nomination overall after Red in 2014. The album also won Best Pop Vocal Album, Swift’s first victory in the category.

The first two singles « Shake It Off » (in 2015) and « Blank Space » (in 2016) were both nominated for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance. The « Bad Blood » remix featuring Kendrick Lamar was nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and won the award for Best Music Video.

Animal Ambition

Animal Ambition (released with the subtitle Animal Ambition: An Untamed Desire to Win) is the fifth studio album by American rapper 50 Cent, who also served as executive producer.

The album was released on June 3, 2014, by G-Unit Records and Caroline Records. All 11 tracks on the standard edition were issued as singles prior to the album’s release; in order, they are « Don’t Worry ‘Bout It », « Hold On », « Pilot », « Smoke », « Hustler », « Chase the Paper », « Everytime I Come Around », « Irregular Heartbeat », « Winners Circle », « Twisted », and « Animal Ambition ». The album features guest appearances from Yo Gotti, Trey Songz, Kidd Kidd, Jadakiss, Mr Probz, Guordan Banks, Prodigy, Schoolboy Q and Styles P.

On December 4, 2013, while doing a press run for the launch of his SMS Audio line of headphones and speakers he announced that a « full body of work », titled Animal Ambition would be released in January 2014. In a December 2013, interview with DJ Whoo Kid, he reiterated plans for the album, saying: « I’m going to drop it in January, it’s a full body of work, I wouldn’t call it a mixtape because it’s a higher grade than the material that I put out on mixtapes. I recorded so many album quality songs that I’m going to put the Animal project out as my viral marketing plan and then it will come out after, Street King Immortal.

« In January 2014, while visiting the Consumer Electronics Show, he explained his motivation to release new music in early 2014, saying: « I’m so anxious to put out material. It took me so long to get the business portion of music straight, because I had went through an auditing process because it was the last record required for Interscope Records. And now, I got Animal Ambition, I was inspired to write this. It really has to be current. If it’s not like right now, what I feel is like the hottest thing, I know it’s done right, but it’s not necessarily what I should be doing right now. »

In a January 2014 interview with Sonic Electronix, he said that he was recording heavily in preparation for both of the albums, saying, « I want to put Animal Ambition out in the first quarter. And then it’ll lead up to Street King Immortal. So it’ll be twelve weeks. That’s why I’m working so hard, when I leave here I go straight back to record again. » He also said that Animal Ambition has a shared sound and theme throughout, saying, « With Animal Ambition, the project is about prosperity.

I got an interesting way of writing it, ‘cause I wrote it from a distorted vision or viewpoint. When Biggie was doing ‘Damn, niggas wanna stick me for my paper, damn,’ that’s about when you get something, the effects of others responding to you doing better. The jealousies connected to it, there’s so many different ways to write it, that the album has those facets to it. The overall theme is ambition and prosperity. »

Rebel Heart

Rebel Heart is the thirteenth studio album by American singer and songwriter Madonna. It was released on March 6, 2015, by Interscope Records. Following the completion of the MDNA era, Madonna worked on the album throughout 2014, co-writing and co-producing it with various musicians, including Diplo, Avicii, and Kanye West. She teased by uploading pictures of her recording sessions on her Instagram account. Working with a number of collaborators posed problem for Madonna in keeping a cohesive sound and direction for Rebel Heart, unlike her previous efforts where only a few people were involved.

Thematically Rebel Heart represents the two different sides of the singer, her romantic and her rebellious side. The themes grew organically during the writing and recording sessions. Musically, it is a pop record which merges an array of genres such as 1990s house, trap and reggae, as well as the usage of acoustic guitars and gospel choir. Some of the songs are autobiographical in nature while others talk about love and introspection of Madonna’s career. Rebel Heart features guest appearances from boxer Mike Tyson and rappers Nicki Minaj, Nas, and Chance the Rapper.

The record had been set for a March 2015 release, with the first single to be released on Valentine’s Day. But after a flurry of unexpected album content leaks, Madonna released the album for pre-order on iTunes Store on December 20, 2014, with six songs being available for download. Police investigation led to an Israeli man being arrested, who was charged for hacking into Madonna’s computer and the leaks. The cover art for the deluxe edition of the album became popular, leading to numerous memes being created on Instagram, Tumblr, and Twitter. To promote the album, Madonna made several television appearances and performances, including the 57th Annual Grammy Awards and the 2015 Brit Awards. Further promotion happened from the Rebel Heart Tour, which started from September 2015 and continue till March 2016 through North America, Europe, Asia and Oceania. « Living for Love », « Ghosttown », « Bitch I’m Madonna », and « Hold Tight » were released as singles from the album.

Rebel Heart received predominantly positive reviews from music critics; multiple reviewers called it her best effort in a decade. They found that unlike her previous two studio efforts, Hard Candy (2008) and MDNA (2012), the album was progressive in its sound. It debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States and the UK Albums Chart. Rebel Heart also peaked at number one in various countries across the world, including major music markets such as Australia, Canada, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Switzerland, while reaching the top ten of the charts in France, Ireland, Mexico, Japan, New Zealand, and Sweden, and attaining Gold certifications in some of the regions.

Shadows in the Night

Bob Dylan (/ˈdɪlən/; born Robert Allen Zimmerman, May 24, 1941) is an American singer-songwriter, artist and writer. He has been influential in popular music and culture for more than five decades. Much of his most celebrated work dates from the 1960s when his songs chronicled social unrest, although Dylan repudiated suggestions from journalists that he was a spokesman for his generation. Nevertheless, early songs such as « Blowin’ in the Wind » and « The Times They Are a-Changin' » became anthems for the American civil rights and anti-war movements.

After he left his initial base in the American folk music revival, his six-minute single « Like a Rolling Stone » altered the range of popular music in 1965. His mid-1960s recordings, backed by rock musicians, reached the top end of the United States music charts while also attracting denunciation and criticism from others in the folk movement.

Dylan’s lyrics have incorporated various political, social, philosophical, and literary influences. They defied existing pop music conventions and appealed to the burgeoning counterculture. Initially inspired by the performances of Little Richard, and the songwriting of Woody Guthrie, Robert Johnson, and Hank Williams, Dylan has amplified and personalized musical genres.

Mobile Portraitx

His recording career, spanning 50 years, has explored the traditions in American song—from folk, blues, and country to gospel, rock and roll, and rockabilly to English, Scottish, and Irish folk music, embracing even jazz and the Great American Songbook. Dylan performs with guitar, keyboards, and harmonica. Backed by a changing line-up of musicians, he has toured steadily since the late 1980s on what has been dubbed the Never Ending Tour. His accomplishments as a recording artist and performer have been central to his career, but songwriting is considered his greatest contribution.

Since 1994, Dylan has published six books of drawings and paintings, and his work has been exhibited in major art galleries. As a musician, Dylan has sold more than 100 million records, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time. He has also received numerous awards including eleven Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and an Academy Award.

Dylan has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Minnesota Music Hall of Fame, Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and Songwriters Hall of Fame. The Pulitzer Prize jury in 2008 awarded him a special citation for « his profound impact on popular music and American culture, marked by lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power. » In May 2012, Dylan received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama.

F.E.A.R.

Papa Roach is an American rock band from Vacaville, California.[1] Formed in 1993, their first major-label release was the triple-platinum album Infest (2000). The group’s success continued with their gold album Lovehatetragedy (2002), their platinum album Getting Away with Murder (2004), The Paramour Sessions (2006), Metamorphosis (2009), Time for Annihilation (2010), The Connection (2012), and F.E.A.R. (2015). Papa Roach has sold more than 20 million album copies worldwide and are known for their songs « Last Resort », « Between Angels and Insects », « She Loves Me Not », « Getting Away with Murder », « Scars », « Lifeline » and « Face Everything and Rise ».

The formation of Papa Roach began in January 1993, when lead singer Jacoby Shaddix and drummer Dave Buckner met on the Vacaville High School football field, where the two ended up talking about music. They were later joined by trombonist Ben Luther and bass guitarist Will James. They decided to enter the school’s talent show, where they performed a version of Jimi Hendrix’s song « Fire », but they ultimately did not win the contest. In March 1993, trombonist Ben Luther was replaced by lead guitarist Jerry Horton from nearby Vanden High School. Horton was introduced to the band through his girlfriend, who was a fan. However, Jerry was at first apprehensive about joining the band because Jacoby, Buckner, and Will all went to different high schools. At this point, Papa Roach were practicing every day and touring, playing every gig they could get. Their first tour van was called Moby Dick, where Jacoby was inspired to come up with his first stage name « Coby Dick ». The band’s name comes from Shaddix’s step-grandfather, Howard William Roatch, who was nicknamed Papa Roach. Roatch committed suicide in 2006 after he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The band pay homage to him with The Paramour Sessions and during live performances of the song « Roses On My Grave ».

ad

In 1994, Papa Roach released their first EP titled Potatoes for Christmas. Drummer Dave Buckner was temporarily replaced by Ryan Brown, as Buckner was spending the year in Seattle studying art. In 1995, they released a demo at Sound Farm Studios titled Caca Bonita. By this time Buckner was back. In 1996, they replaced original bass guitarist Will James, who had become heavily involved in a church summer camp, with Tobin Esperance, because James’ absence would limit the band’s summer practicing and touring. As Esperance had been with the band as a roadie for a while, the transition was an easy one.

On February 4, 1997, the band produced their first full-length album, entitled Old Friends from Young Years. Still touring heavily, they supported bands such as Incubus; Powerman 5000; Hed PE; Snot; Far; Earth, Wind & Fire; and Static-X.

In 1998, they released an EP titled 5 Tracks Deep. It sold more than 1,000 copies in its first month of release. In 1999, they produced another EP, which would end up being their last independent release, titled Let ‘Em Know. Its success caught the attention of Warner Music Group, who as part of a development deal provided a small amount of money for the production of a five-track promo-demo CD.[5] The band decided they wanted influential rock producer Jay Baumgardner on board to produce the record.[5] In an interview with HitQuarters, Baumgardner said, “At first I wasn’t really convinced it would work out, but then I saw a video of them performing at a club – I saw all these kids going wild, knowing the songs by heart – and that’s when I realized that they definitely had potential.”[5]

Warner Brothers was not convinced by the demo, however, and elected not to sign them.[5] The unreleased disc included the songs « Infest », « Last Resort », « Broken Home », « Dead Cell », and « She Loves Me Not » – the first four would later feature on their Infest album, and the last on Lovehatetragedy.

Back to Black

Back in Black

Back in Black is the seventh studio album by Australian rock band AC/DC. Produced by Robert John « Mutt » Lange, the album was released on 25 July 1980 by Albert Productions and Atlantic Records. By the late 1970s, AC/DC began to achieve significant popularity outside their native Australia, with high-energy live performances and a string of successful albums. In 1979, they paired with producer Lange and recorded their international breakthrough, Highway to Hell. Shortly before the recording of their follow-up, lead vocalist Bon Scott died after a night of heavy alcohol consumption. The group continued on with ex-Geordie singer Brian Johnson.

Back in Black was recorded over seven weeks in the Bahamas in spring 1980. The area was hit by tropical storms at the time, making the sessions difficult at times. Johnson penned the album’s lyrics and melodies, while guitarists Angus and Malcolm Young composed the music. Its musical content consists of hard rock-styled numbers with lyrics relating to sex, alcohol, partying and rock and roll. Lange demanded perfection in the band’s recordings, particularly on Johnson’s vocals. Following its completion, the group mixed Back in Black at Electric Lady Studios in New York City. The album’s all-black cover was designed as a « sign of mourning » for Scott.

Their sixth international release, Back in Black was an unprecedented success: it has sold an estimated 50 million copies worldwide.[2][3][4][5] Its enormous sales figures have made it the second-highest-selling album in history. The band supported the album with a yearlong world tour, cementing them among the most popular music acts of the early 1980s. Back in Black received positive critical reception at the time of its release, and it has since been included on numerous lists of « greatest » albums. Since its initial release, the album has been reissued and remastered multiple times, most recently for digital distribution.

By 1979, AC/DC were poised to receive a significant level of success with their sixth studio album, Highway to Hell. Robert John « Mutt » Lange produced the record, making the band’s sound more catchy and accessible to international audiences, and it became their first platinum album in the United States, selling over one million copies, while also peaking at number 17 on that country’s pop charts and number eight in the United Kingdom.[6] AC/DC, formed in 1973, first broke into international markets in 1977 with their fourth record, Let There Be Rock. They were notable for their high-energy live performances, in which lead guitarist Angus Young would don a schoolboy outfit, and singer Bon Scott’s distinctive raspy voice.[6]

Well, the stuff that I liked growing up was AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, but I also liked the Beatles and guys like Cat Stevens and Elton John.
Dave Mustaine

As the new decade approached, the group set off for the UK and France for the final tour dates of their breakthrough release.[7] They planned to begin recording a follow-up shortly after its completion. On 19 February 1980, Scott went on a drinking binge in a London pub that caused him to lose consciousness, so a friend let him rest in the back of his Renault 5 overnight.

Marshall
AC/DC is a prime example of taking that blues rock thing and just living in that world. They only really move the furniture around a little on each album, but it still works. Joe Perry

The next morning, Scott was found unresponsive and rushed to King’s College Hospital where medical personnel pronounced him dead on arrival. The coroner ruled that pulmonary aspiration of vomit was the cause of Scott’s death, but the official cause was listed on the death certificate as « acute alcoholic poisoning » and classified as « death by misadventure ». Scott was cremated and his ashes were interred by his family at Fremantle Cemetery in Fremantle, Western Australia.[8] The loss devastated the band, who considered breaking up. However, friends and family persuaded them to carry on.[9]

I love jazz and pop rock and country. I grew up listening to Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Def Leppard, AC/DC, Anne Murray – if I hear something really great… I want to be a part of it.
Natalie MacMaster

After Bon Scott’s funeral, the band immediately began auditions for a replacement frontman. Among the applicants were Gary Pickford Hopkins and Allan Fryer of Fat Lip,[10] who, like Stevie Wright of the Easybeats, was touted by the press as most-certain replacements.[11] At the advice of Lange, the group brought in Geordie singer Brian Johnson, who impressed the group.[12] After the band begrudgingly worked through the rest of the list of applicants in the following days, Johnson returned for a second rehearsal.[13] On 29 March, Malcolm Young called the singer to offer him the job, to his surprise. Out of respect for Bon Scott, the band wanted a frontman who would not be a mere imitator of him. In addition to his distinctive voice, demeanor and love of classic soul and blues music, the group liked Johnson’s engaging personality.[14] Johnson was officially announced as the new lead singer of AC/DC on 8 April 1980.
